my theme study on barefoot soldier Johnson beharry

The book that i have studied that connects with my theme is an auto biography, you can guess from other posts that my theme is war and religion so this book is key to help me understand more about my about them.
The book its self is based on a man from grenada who struggles in life and saves up for a year to come to the uk, when over in the uk he follows the life of crime when driving through the suburb streets of london he is pulled over by police on this cold winter day Johnson is sweating in a t-shirt he is only cautioned about his tax but he later reveals hes sweating because on the back seats he has 3 kilograms of cannabis.
Its at this point he realises he needs to get out of this crime life he has got him self into constantly through out the book he states how hes nan is his biggest inspiration and he struggled with her death.
With in the week he sees an advert for the army so insist to he’s aunt who he is staying with at the time he will go down to the carers office where he will apply to become a infantry man or as Johnson says “desert rat”  he does not get the reaction he is hoping for from he’s aunt she insists the army is racist but he still goes for it, he is told by the carers officer he is not legible to join because of fitness problems this is a big knock back for him but he dont let this deture him.
For the next 6 weeks he trains un till  he is as fit as a athlete.
It is from here that the book cuts to the chase and then gets back to when he is preparing for iraq.
After this the book is just stating events of which happend in the tour in iraq.
On 1 May 2004, Beharry helped assist a foot patrol caught in a series of ambushes. His vehicle was hit by multiple rocket propelled grenades but he drove through the ambush and extracted his wounded colleagues from the vehicle, all the time exposed to further enemy fire. He was cited on this occasion for ‘valour of the highest order’.
While back on duty on 11 June 2004, a rocket propelled grenade hit Beharry’s vehicle incapacitating his commander and injuring several of the crew. Despite his very serious head injuries, Beharry took control of his vehicle and drove it out of the ambush area before losing consciousness. He required brain surgery for his head injuries, and he was still recovering when he was awarded the VC in March 2005.
